Reading the labels

What conservation status means.

We use the categories of the IUCN Red List, the global standard for measuring extinction risk.

Least Concern

Widespread and abundant. Still worth watching, because common species can decline quickly.

Vulnerable

Facing a high risk of extinction in the wild without action to reduce threats.

Endangered

A very high risk of extinction. Populations have fallen sharply or are severely fragmented.

Critically Endangered

The highest risk category for wild species. Immediate protection is needed.
